Case Study of the trade mission and conference "German-Irish Digital Innovation Summit"

The German-Irish Digital Innovation Summit brought together over 55 Irish and German experts in the area of Software Development and Online Gaming. The day-long event featured interactive discussion panels and expert presentations in a range of areas including gaming, gamification, e-commerce and funding and investment. There were software product demonstrations including semantic language software for online shops, a fully integrated software solution for HR process management, innovative award-winning games and examples of the application of gaming technology and processes to non-gaming sectors.

In addition, over 60 meetings took place over the course of the week between the visiting delegation of eight German companies and interested Irish organisations with a range of very positive results, including concrete partnership discussions and promising project co-operations.

Some points to note from Tuesday’s event:

  • Thierry Baujard of Media Deals explained the challenge of sourcing funding in the entertainment and media industry and the paradigm shift from classic product commercialisation to a holistic approach of commercialising the whole company as a brand.
  • In a variety of discussion panels over the course of the day the audience got engaged in discussing many topics such as:

- importance of cooperation between Ireland and Germany in this particular sector

to solve financing problems and boost innovative and entrepreneurial strength in
  Germany and Ireland
- how innovative technologies can detect fraud within the digital marketing sector
and show real time results of digital marketing activities
- the use of gaming technology across non-gaming industries,  for example in
specialised areas such as healthcare and medical devices.

  •  Paul Sweetman from the Irish Software Association (ISA) presented Ireland’s advantages as a high tech location, especially in the area of software development, online gaming and access to skilled labour.
  • Thorsten Unger CEO of Wegesrand and  CEO of Wegesrand & GAME - German Association for computer gaming engaged the audience on the difference between the Irish and German markets for software development and online gaming and highlighted Germany’s strength and growth potential in these areas.

Also as part of this trade mission, five of the German companies travelled to Limerick to discuss co-operation opportunities with the research team in Lero, Ireland’s software research centre. The visit resulted in concrete co-operation opportunities in a variety of research projects in the area of social recognition, STEM initiatives and training initiatives e.g. emergency crew training.

The German companies also attended the Games Ireland Gathering, where they benefitted from the networking opportunities, for example Kunst-Stoff GmbH established a very good contact partner in the area of Fintech. Furthermore Michael Morgen from Tutorize was able to gain valuable business contacts with e.g. Doc Norton Founder & CEO of CTO2 (Formerly at Groupon).

Some testimonials from German-Irish Digital Innovation Summit and trade mission:

·     “As a three year old start up, this is our first venture into an export market and it was really positive. In Germany we are working on great projects with big German companies, but the decision-making period can take a lot of time. Irish companies are smaller which means they are more accessible, more flexible and agile, willing to try things out, more open. We had some great meetings - in particular we met three Irish e-commerce companies that are really interested in our services. We have set up follow up meetings and will prepare a demo to show to them when we are back in Dublin for the Web Summit in early November.” David Urbansky, Semknox GmbH

·     “The presentations were extremely insightful and it was a very useful insight into the German-Irish dynamic in respect of innovations and development in the software & gaming sector.” Paddy Stapleton, Baker Tilly Ryan Glennon

·     “It was a very interesting exchange of ideas and networking. The event offered an expanded knowledge on funding opportunities in the software development and online-gaming sector.” Irish participant @ German-Irish Digital Innovation Summit

We look forward to co-operations in the future – in the area of software development, or many other areas. Next topics on our agenda are:
